A new course for unemployed residents who are keen to start a business has been launched by Advantages of Age.

The Startup School for Seniors, which kicked off this month, is a free eight-week eLearning course for older people who are keen to build a new business. The motivating online course has been designed to support people in gaining the necessary skills to get their businesses off the ground in challenging times. Funded by Hammersmith & Fulham local authority, it is free for those based in the borough.

Advantages of Age was originally created in March 2016, as a lifestyle website to provide a platform for older people who don’t relate to the media narrative that suggests older business people are past-it, inadequate or invisible. It’s since developed into a thriving community that focuses on supporting the wellbeing of people over 50.

The new course is being delivered by entrepreneur, Suzanne Noble, and business coach, Mark Elliott, who create a fun, interactive, learning experience and support people to progress week by week. Local resident, Katy, who runs Striped Sisters, a website for empowering women, said the course was brilliant for giving her the push she needed. “This course came at the right time to really help me get things going. I've been working on the idea for a while and needed that extra elbow shove in the right direction!"

In the current cohort 35 students have signed up. The founders are hoping to run future opportunities following the success of the current course.
