10 places to shop for Christmas gifts in H&F

The weather’s getting colder, the nights are darker and somewhere in the distance you can hear the dulcet tones of your colleague singing along to Slade on the 17th Zoom call of the day. After a strange and bumpy year for many of us, Christmas is now just around the corner. Despite the challenges of lockdown 2.0, local businesses are pulling together to offer customers the best shopping experiences they can- even if it happens behind a screen. So if you’re keen to give Bezos Towers a miss this year and support our local community, check out our list of ideas below.

1. Quirky Gadgets

Christmas is all about giving gifts that people wouldn’t normally buy for themselves, and that’s where Quirky Gadgets comes in. Packed with toys for children (and adults) of all ages, there’s also a great choice of unique lamps and kitchen equipment. One of my personal favourites is this DIY miniature flower house, which will double as a home decoration after it's built. Amidst the gadgets, they’ve also got hampers to choose from, for anyone looking for a one-stop-shop.

2. JW Beeton

This Askew Road store in Shepherds Bush sells everything from clothing to games, puzzles and fragrances. Throughout lockdown and beyond, they’re offering Facetime shopping with advice and support from the team. Postal and local deliveries are available, and they’re even organising private, Covid-safe visits for those who prefer to shop the old-fashioned way.

3. Nomad Books

If escaping the pandemic with a good book has been your style this year, I doubt you’ll be alone. Independent, Fulham-based Nomad is here for all your reading needs, selling an extensive collection of books for children and adults, as well as a wide selection of French literature. You can call them up for options and advice on choosing the perfect gift for a family member, and they’re also offering a delivery service for local residents.

4. Sam’s Christmas Hampers

Located by the Thames, Sam’s Riverside is a renowned Hammersmith restaurant, known for its lobster rolls and parmesan churros. But it’s also home to Sam’s Larder, which serves a mix of food-based gifts to suit everyone’s taste-buds. They’re currently stocking hampers decadent enough to impress Henry IIIV, but you can also build your own if you fancy something bespoke.

5. Antiques - 19 Shops on Lillie Road

There are 19 antique shops on Lillie Road, and pottering around them all is a lovely way to spend an afternoon in non-Covid times. Luckily, the great and glorious internet has brought us another solution. This website has listings for all the stores along the street, with online shopping available for some outlets.

6. CNDL

My dad might not agree, but I’m a firm believer that you can never have too many candles- especially the scented kind. If you’ve got a fellow candle fanatic in your life, check out this Fulham-based vegan brand. CNDL prioritises environmental and social responsibility, with all their materials recyclable and cruelty free. There’s an online shop and free deliveries for orders over £50.

7. Handmade in Hammersmith

You've probably heard of Etsy, but have you ever met any local sellers? Handmade in Hammersmith makes new things out of old, creating gifts from recycled materials. Specialising in things made from tweed and tartan, many of the items have been reclaimed from kilts, jackets, skirts and shirts.

8. Indian Summer

An independent lifestyle shop in Parsons Green, Indian Summer sells womenswear, jewellery, children' clothes, Christmas gifts and more. Throughout the pandemic they’ve been running a click and collect service, so you won’t have to pack into a busy store- even if lockdown is lifted. And who can resist a pair of sparkly earmuffs with kitten ears?

9. Infinity Wines

Wine is always a great gift, but it feels even more applicable for 2020. Infinity Wines can be found outdoors at our farmer’s markets on the weekends in Ravenscourt Park on Saturdays and Bishops Park on Sundays. For those who want delivery, there’s also online order options available. All their wines and proseccos are organic, made without the use of chemicals in the vineyard or added sulphites and sugar. Apparently this means less of a hangover, which is a theory I’ll be more than happy to put to the test.

Brought to you by Katie and Jo, this Fulham-based fashion boutique stocks a wide range of independent designers, as well as online shopping options. If you want to buy clothes but you don’t know the right size, there’s also a gift voucher service available. There’s even a blog on their website with style tips for anyone seeking inspiration.
